Project note

This high-tech Iwagumi aquarium measures 220×45×45 cm and holds 445 litres. Iwagumi comes from the Japanese tradition of stone arrangement, where rocks are grouped in a clear hierarchy: a main stone sets the focal point, supporting stones accompany it, and plant variety is deliberately kept limited.

Composition

Grey, sharp-edged rocks are placed in several groups along the long tank. The tallest stone forms the centre of gravity, while the other groups continue the rhythm to the right with decreasing height.

The floor is covered by a dense green carpet flowing uninterrupted between the stones; the simple ground brings out the texture and silhouette of the rock. A school of fish in the open water adds movement to the wide, calm space.

Technical setup

Strong light and a high-tech CO2 system keep the carpet plants dense and even. The tank was built from AGC AZZURA glass as part of our custom aquarium fabrication service. You can estimate the light and CO2 balance with our lighting calculator and CO2 / pH / KH calculator.

Why do carpet plants need strong light and CO2?

Low plants covering the floor only grow dense and even when light and CO2 are balanced and sufficient; when they fall short, the carpet thins out.

Why such a long, shallow proportion?
