Forest Style Planted Aquarium — 220×60×60 cm, 792 L

This forest style planted aquarium measures 220×60×60 cm and holds roughly 792 litres. It is built on the Nature Aquarium approach, bringing a slice of a natural forest under water and treating plants, roots and fish as one ecosystem.

Composition

The defining feature is that the roots do not stop at the surface: rising like tree trunks, they break out of the water and spread their branches above the tank. The aquarium stops being a glass box seen only from the front and becomes a piece of landscape standing in the room.

The floor is covered by a dense green carpet, with darker, more textured plant groups at the base of the roots. Small schooling fish add movement and scale.

Technical setup

The tank is made of UltraClear (extra-clear) glass; low-iron glass shows the green of the plants and the clarity of the water without a colour cast. A CO2 system supports dense plant growth. What is Nature Aquarium?

Does a planted aquarium need CO2?

For dense, fast plant growth CO2 makes a big difference, and it was used here. A CO2-free (low-tech) setup with slower-growing plants is also possible.
