Set a focal point
Give the composition a lead character: a commanding rock cluster, a leaning piece of wood, or a clearing. Placing the focus slightly off-centre, following the rule of thirds, makes the scene feel far more natural.
Depth and negative space
Stones and wood that shrink from front to back, together with open sand pathways, create perspective. Instead of filling every centimetre, leave spaces that let the layout breathe.
Make plants serve the composition
Foreground carpets, midground textures and background heights build a layered read. A plan for light, CO2 and trimming keeps that composition intact over time.
